March 7, 2012 – Raleigh, NC – NC State University hosted – and won — the first annual Mid Atlantic Collegiate Racquetball Conference championships (MACRC). Both the men’s and women’s teams clinched the championships for their divisions, leading NC State to win the overall team championship.
More than 40 student athletes of the NC State racquetball club worked to make the event a success, drawing more than 70 students from 10 schools across the region to compete at NC State’s Carmichael Gym.
“We have one of the best racquetball facilities in the country here at NC State,” said Ed Remen, an instructor in health and exercise studies, racquetball club coach and Hall of Fame racquetball player. “This facility allows for major tournaments, as we have more than 18 courts available for play.”
In addition to the MACRC, the 3rd annual Wolfpack Classic was held at NC State in late February 2012. This tournament boasted record attendance with more than 150 athletes from 11 states, ranging in ages from 12 to 85 years old.
“Being the largest racquetball tournament in North Carolina, this event gives great exposure to the University and our program,” Remen said. “The organization, planning and implementation of such a tournament serve as a ‘working lab’ for our [racquetball club] students.”
Every club member has successfully completed PE 256, a racquetball class in the Physical Education department’s Basic Instructional Program.
“The student athletes have developed a passion for their new lifetime sport and are working hard to promote racquetball and share their love of the game.”
Any student is welcome to join the NC State racquetball club. From beginners to advanced players, the organization offers the opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills and take on a leadership role to enhance their collegiate experience.
