Fitness and wellness courses focus on the fundamentals of health-based fitness, encompassing cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, muscular flexibility, and body composition. Students will apply these fundamental fitness principles in a variety of activities depending on the selected course. Undergraduate students are required to complete one credit hour from this selection of courses.
Instruction via activity courses is given to reinforce and apply the basic fitness principles with regard to the given activity. These courses focus on helping students acquire or enhance the basic motor skills and skill-related competencies, concepts, and strategies of physical activities and sport. Additionally, students will gain a thorough working knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of the spirit and rules, history, safety, and etiquette of physical activities and sport. Undergraduate students may use one credit hour from this selection of courses to help fulfill their HES GEP requirement.
Minor Program Courses
Our department currently offers five minor programs including Coaching Education, Health Education, Outdoor Leadership, Sports Science, and Dance. The courses in the minor programs strive to prepare students for future employment opportunities in the given area of interest by developing leadership skills, offering practical experience, and participating in various internship opportunities.
Distance Education Courses
There is a growing selection of courses that are available through distance education. These offerings include courses from the fitness and wellness, activity and minor program categories. These courses carry academic credits that can be transferred to degree programs at NC State or at other colleges or universities. They are designed for optimum schedule flexibility, allowing you to balance your studies with work, family, or other life responsibilities.
